The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) commissioned me to create eight steel railings for the Metro North Train Station in Pelham, NY, a suburb of New York City . The resulting large scale project Home: Inside/Outside was inspired by the designs from William Morris, The Roycrofters and other well known Arts & Crafts style designers from the late 1890’s when Pelham was first settled. I wanted to create a feeling of home outside. The shadows from the metal grates create a “carpet” on the train platform similar to the carpets created by these masters, while the railings themselves act like the planks of a wood floor. Each grate has been created by overlaying three separate panels to create these complex patterns where positive and negative space and repeating forms are all taken into account.
